Showcase Sunday #17

Inspired by Celine from Nyx Book Reviews, I've decided to combine several weekly wrap-up memes into one post. Showcase Sunday is hosted by Vicky at Books, Biscuits and Tea. Stacking the Shelves is hosted at Tynga's Reviews, and Sunday Post is hosted at Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer. Letterbox Love is a special British book-haul meme hosted by Lindsey at Narratively Speaking.

Last Week:

I'm so pleased with myself this week, as not only did I manage to beat Camp NaNo (yay!), I also went to London and managed to come home with only one book! Is that good willpower or what? Hope everyone else had a lovely week. Have you signed up for Bout of Books yet? I'm really looking forward to it!

Last week's posts:

Book Review - The Eternity Cure, by Julie Kagawa

Book Review - Zenn Scarlett, by Christian Schoon

Book Reviews - Myths and Legends series: Jason and the Argonauts, and Dragonslayers

The Grey Side of the Force (Star Wars Day post)

New Goodies:

Bought in London:

Sea of Poppies, by Amitav Ghosh

Invocation, by Jo L. Walton
(not to be confused with Jo Walton!)
Free on kindle at the time.
The Mermaid of Brooklyn, by Amy Shearn
59p on kindle.
A Load of Old Bones, by Suzette Hill
Kindle daily deal (99p) - I thought this one looked really fun!

Special delivery from Emma's Tea Lair:

This is a handwritten short story from Emma Newman.

The story is based on one of my prompts, and Emma had
promised to handwrite and send the story to anyone whose
prompt she used! Look, she even sealed it with sparkly wax
and stamped it with a faery seal. How awesome is that? :-)

Other Stuff:

- Fantasy Faction are doing a book club read-along of The Night Circus, by Erin Morgenstern. This is the first time I'll have joined in with the FF Book Club, and it looks really fun! I'm also about 60 pages into the book and would really recommend it so far. So if you fancy joining in (on the Fantasy Faction forums), it's still not too late!

- Bout of Books 7.0 is nearly here! Squee!

- Do you love Steampunk? Wondering what it is and what all the fuss is about? Want to know more? Hannah at Once Upon a Time is going to be running a Steampunk event this summer. Hop on over if you're interested in finding out more, or if you'd like to help out! :-)

Hope everyone's had a lovely sunny week!

  1. Wow that handwritten letter is all kinds of awesome!!

And I've always thought that the Night Circus looked interesting. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying it!

    1. It's so cool isn't it? Yes, The Night Circus is really interesting so far, not quite like anything I've read before.

  2. Awww I met Emma last week, she is lovely (and was wearing an amazing coat she made herself, I am in awe). I think Sea of Poppies has been on my TBR for 4 years now...

    1. Emma's clothes are fantastic. She makes new outfits for each con and event, and they're so good! :-) Haha, Sea of Poppies has been on my TBR for ages too, but had never actually seen it in a bookshop until then, only the sequels. Couldn't resist picking it up when I saw it.

  3. Aww, thanks so much for the linky! :D Can't wait to get started on all the prep for it!!

And I LOVE your wax sealed letter. So awesome.

    1. You're very welcome! :-) I love steampunk. Hope all the prep goes well!

It's ace isn't it? And now I really want a faery seal too...

  4. The Night Circus was one of my favorite books from last year. I really loved it a lot. I really like when people write you a handwritten letter. Great haul.

    1. Thanks Grace! :-) Ooh, glad to hear you really liked it. I'm really enjoying it so far!

  5. Sea of Poppies looks gorgeous and the sealed letter is oh so cool! :D Great haul!
    Have a nice week!

    1. Thanks! :-) Sea of Poppies has such an irresistably lovely cover!

  6. I love that sealed letter/short story -- what a wonderful surprise!

My daughter loved The Night Circus; I still need to read it. I wish I could do the read-a-thon, but I'm swamped. But I'll be checking out the Steampunk thingy!

    1. Oh good, I'm feeling really positive about The Night Circus, hope it stays as good! The letter/story is lovely isn't it? :-)

  7. Only one book you are a god, and congrats on surpassing your goals. I love the sealed letter too cool. Have a nice week! The Sunday Post

  8. Oh wow, you did wonderful with only getting one book! :D And many congrats to you for beating Nano!!! :D Yeah!!!

Oh do hope you enjoy the Steampunk event. :) I've been loving that genre for a while now.

Hope you have an amazing week!

I too posted a Sunday Post, if you'd like to stop by...

  9. That sealed letter is amazing! I'm completely jealous of her handwriting, I wish mine were at least as readable as Congrats on beating Nano! That's really awesome that you finished it out! I'm going to do the November one again, I'm just working on basic info for everything first. I went into the last one with absolutely nothing but an idea and the amount of editing and rewriting that needs to be done is daunting, but at least it's a whole first draft. I hope you have a great week and enjoy your new books!

    1. It's such a cool idea isn't it? :-) Oooh, good luck with November NaNo. Think I'll try that one too, but not sure what I'll write yet. At least there's plenty of time to plan between now and then! :-)
